As the oldest of the three brothers, Butch plays rhythm guitar and sings some lead along with baritone and bass. At a young age, his parents introduced him to bluegrass music through television shows and the radio. It soon became evident that he had an interest in the music. One band that Butch says had an influence on him was Flatt and Scruggs. Soon after his interest began, he learned how to play the guitar, which has become his main instrument. Butch also sings in a gospel group called Light of Grace which is composed of members from his church. Although he has only played with The Sheppard Brothers, Butch has met many people in bluegrass music, partly from the emcee work that he enjoys doing at a few festivals each year. Butch also does most of the onstage emcee work for the band and it can get quite interesting at times when he is at the mic. As a retiree from the WV Army National Guard, Butch and his wife Bonnie now live in Cottageville, WV and have two children, Angie and Aaron, along with three grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
