Shirley has been playing bluegrass music since she was eight years old. She first learned to play the guitar, but soon gave that up to play the upright bass which was twice her size. Being born into a bluegrass family, she became the bass player in her sibling band, "The Brady Bunch," where she played throughout her teen years. Playing in her family band led her to meet the Sheppard family, where she would later go on to marry Terry Sheppard, the mandolin player for The Sheppard Brothers. They have been married for forty years and have two grown children, Emmy Benson (Dustin) and Scott Sheppard, and two grandsons Sawyer Alan Benson and Elijah Scott Benson and one granddaughter Isabella Katherine Benson. As a member of The Sheppard Brothers for thirty seven years, Shirley delivers the duties of a solid upright bass to the band with an occasional slap if you listen close. When not taking care of the band's bookings, Shirley enjoys gardening, canning, and especially enjoys cooking and baking at her home in Newark, West Virginia.
